Margot Robbie has turned herself into a household name, taking on roles like Harley Quinn, Tonya Harding, and Sharon Tate, to name a few, and now she is portraying an even bigger world-renowned character in Barbie. The film has kept its synopsis under wraps as a whole, but ever since Robbie’s co-star Ryan Gosling stated last year that the film boasted one of the best scripts he’d ever read, people started to wonder if this movie was actually going to be more fulfilling than we had bargained for.

Robbie has now spoken out about her first impressions of the movie’s script in a recent interview with BAFTA (via Deadline), saying:

“The first time I read the Barbie script, my reaction was, ‘Ah! This is so good. What a shame it will never see the light of day. Because they are never going to let us make this movie.”

Robbie couldn’t say more about the story surrounding Barbie and stayed tight-lipped when asked about the script. The film’s director and co-writer, Oscar-nominee Greta Gerwig, previously spoke out about how terrifying it was for her to write this script, telling Dua Lipa on her podcast, At Your Service:

“It was terrifying. I think there’s something about starting from that place where it’s like, ‘Well, anything is possible.’ It felt like vertigo starting to write it. Like, where do you even begin? What would be the story?”

She later on added:

“Usually, that’s where the best stuff is. When you’re like, ‘I am terrified of that.’ Anything where you’re like, ‘This could be a career-ender,’ then you’re like, ‘OK, I probably should do it.’”

Robbie stars in the title role of the classic Barbie doll, and Ryan Gosling stars as Ken. They are joined by an all-star cast that also includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, Ariana Greenblatt, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Ncuti Gatwa, Emerald Fennell, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kayne, Connor Swindells, Ritu Arya, Jamie Demetriou and Marisa Abela.

Barbie hits theaters on July 21st. Are you looking forward to seeing this movie?
