Andy Serkis is currently developing a new Lord of the Rings film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt For Gollum, which will dive into a background story for Gollum.

Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh are also working on the film as producers and writers and as a fan of these epic fantasy stories, I can’t help but be curious and excited to see how this film project turns out.

We don’t really know anything about the story or what other Lord of the Rings characters might appear in the film, but Viggo Mortensen is up for returning as Aragorn!

In a recent interview with GQ, the actor was asked if returning to the role was still something he’d consider with the upcoming movie.

Mortensen said, “Sure. I don’t know exactly what the story is, I haven’t heard. Maybe I’ll hear about it eventually. I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot.”

He continued: “I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise.”

Now, we have no idea if the film’s story will even involve the character Aragorn, but with the film being a prequel of sorts, this would certainly be a young version of Aragorn if he was included.

We’ll just have to wait and see what kind of story this film is going to tell!

When talking about why they are telling this story, Jackson said: “The Gollum/Sméagol character has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, whilst his Sméagol side is, arguably, quite sympathetic.

“I think he connects with readers and film audiences alike, because there’s a little bit of both of them in all of us. We really want to explore his backstory and delve into those parts of his journey we didn’t have time to cover in the earlier films.

“It’s too soon to know who will cross his path, but suffice to say we will take our lead from Professor Tolkien.”
