Human Instrumentality Project is an anime-inspired deathcore band from Guangzhou, China. With music influenced by the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, the band explores psychological breakdowns and religious symbolism. By combining classical compositions and anime soundtracks with brutal deathcore, this five-man band captures the duality of humanity in Evangelion.

Consisting of vocalist Ray, guitarist Hoyeung, bassist MD, keyboardist and programmer Malt, and drummer Bion; Human Instrumentality Project invites to an immersive experience in a fusion of powerful sound and captivating storytelling. Not only through the music itself, but also the English and Japanese lyrics, and spoken narratives.

On May 20, the newest album LCL SEA was released after being in the works for almost two years! It does a fantastic job in merging the worlds of Evangelion and deathcore. We’re sure if the Evangelion protagonist Shinji had a listen to the album, it would bring back all his psychological nightmares.

Just as the Evangelion anime itself, the overarching theme of the album LCL SEA centers around the transformative journey of self-discovery, highlighting the importance of genuine human connection in a complex and uncertain world.

The album is divided into two distinct chapters, each representing a different aspect. The first half, titled Angel of Doom, embodies the “real world”, while the latter half, titled Dream, represents the “spiritual world”. These chapters complement and complete each other, offering a cohesive musical journey that explores both realms.

For those unfamiliar with Evangelion‘s story, the album name LCL SEA can refer to two things. A sea that was formed in the “real world” after one of the major incidents in the anime, but also a certain “spiritual world” where humanity is one—without singularity.

As detailed on the band’s Bandcamp page, a significant portion of the album showcases extensive international collaboration, involving vocalists, choirs, classical instrumentals, and more. The quoted parts below only scratches the surface of it.

For “Dream I: L.C.L Sea”, we gathered many musical maestros from around the world. The choir was recorded and produced by Chilean Damprog Music Studios.

The piano section was co-composed and recorded by Ukrainian professional pianist and arranger Roksana Smirnova, who has a long history of receiving countless awards.

Vanessa Rincon, a soprano and soloist of 16 years and professional vocal teacher.
