Disney is currently developing Tron 3 with Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Kon Tiki) directing, and Jared Leto set to star. It was also recently announced that Evan Peters (Dahmer, WandaVision, X-Men) has joined the project, which is a great casting choice.

The movie is titled Tron: Ares, and the story is going to focus on the emergence of a sentient program that somehow crosses over into the human world. That program is called Ares, which is the manifestation of the Tron program.

We’ve now learned that Tron creator Steven Lisberger is involved with the development of the film and In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, talked about the development of the film and his involvement saying:

“The Tron team is hard at work. They are always hard at work. It’s going to happen. My goal with these things in playing the Obi-Wan role is to say the one sentence that has an impact. I try to say something that is useful to them without getting into the weeds.”

He went on to share what it was like for him to work on the first Tron movie and how that experience impacted how he helps out on this new movie.

“We shot a storyboard movie on Tron 1. One of Disney’s Nine Old Men was still out at the studio. I was so excited to show it to him because lord knows I could have used a mentor at that point. I showed him our storyboard movie. He sat there, he watched the whole thing, and then he turned to me and said, ‘Kid — you’re on your own.’ And got up and walked out of the room. So I’m trying to keep my input down to sentences but hopefully sentences that are some use to them.”

That’s a pretty funny story. The story he was trying to tell was just too much for the guy and beyond anything he could comprehend. Regardless, Lisberger went out and made an awesome movie that was so far ahead of its time. It’s great to learn that he’s been brought on board to consult on Tron: Ares and as a fan of this franchise, I just hope that this next movie ends up being a crazy and fun ride!
