The annual British charity event Soccer Aid took place this past weekend. In a stirring opener, actor Tom Hiddleston delivered a speech thanking those in attendance for their contributions.
Tom Hiddleston helps UNICEF raise £15 million
In a recent clip posted to Twitter, Hiddleston stood in the middle of Old Trafford — the soccer stadium in Greater Manchester, England, and home to Manchester United. The actor then made an impassioned plea for donations from those watching at home.
“By giving tonight, your act of kindness can travel around the world, and make life better for a child somewhere,” Hiddleston said. “Every single day, children are living in the most challenging situations, and every single day, UNICEF is helping. All over the world, in every situation.”
By the end of the charity event, UNICEF had announced that it had raised a whopping £15 million. This will help fight malnutrition and keep children safe in times of crisis, as well as get them access to basic necessities.
The annual Soccer Aid charity event sees a variety of celebrities and former soccer players taking part in an exhibition-style match. Usually, the teams are made up of English players and then a Soccer Aid World XI team, which consists of a ton of other players. This year, the World XI team won its fifth straight match.
