Last week it was reported that Sony Pictures had removed the Marvel movie El Muerto from their release schedule. Now, it’s being reported that Bad Bunny is no longer involved with the project, and Sony is looking to move forward without him by bringing in another actor to take on the lead role.

This report comes from One Take News, and the studio is still very much interested in moving forward with the project. As of right now, with the writer’s strike happening, there are a lot of aspects of the project that could change. The outlet also notes that it’s unclear if Bad Bunny will still serve as an executive producer on the movie.

The script for the movie was being written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and Jonas Cuarón is set to direct. The Marvel character is an antihero who is the son of a luchador next in line to inherit the ancestral power of “El Muerto.”

When the project was first announced, Bad Bunny, aka Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, said in a statement: “To bring El Muerto to life is just incredible .. so exciting. It’s the perfect role for me and it’s going to be epic.”

He later added: “It’s crazy. It’s something that I can’t believe it yet. I’m very happy about this character, about this opportunity to be the first Latin [lead]. It’s not about I’m gonna be the first Latino making a role, it’s gonna be about the first Latino main character, is the important thing. So it’s something huge, and it will be epic. I know that people are gonna be proud of my work.”

Sources told the outlet that Bad Bunny leaving the project shouldn’t come as a surprise. “Bad Bunny is the world’s largest musician and combined with him touring as well as his commitments to the WWE, his schedule is extremely packed and is not made to accommodate a filming schedule for a major blockbuster pic.”

It’s also said that there are “rumblings that the star ruffled some feathers with Sony and it’s no surprise he’s not involved anymore.”

There doesn’t seem to be much excitement surrounding this movie, but I’m curious to see what Sony is going to do with it.
