Showtime has made the decision to halt a couple of projects that have been in the middle of development including the highly anticipated sequel series to the sci-fi film Gattaca and the Mandy Patinkin-led series titled Seasoned.

The news of a Gattaca series being in development at Showtime first surfaced a few months ago, generating excitement among fans of the fantastic sci-fi film. The cable network is also no longer moving forward on the projects Split and Sweetness.

According to sources, the reason behind these cancellations lies with the fact that all of the projects were produced by external studios. While the decision to halt these shows is undoubtedly disappointing for fans, the studios responsible for their production will have the opportunity to shop them around to other networks and streaming platforms.

These recent development cuts are part of a larger trend at Showtime and Paramount as a whole. Following Chris McCarthy‘s assumption of the Showtime leadership, the network significantly reduced its development slate. Paramount+ also made headlines earlier this week with the cancellation and removal of several shows, including Star Trek: Prodigy and Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.

Taking a closer look at the canceled projects, Gattaca would have taken place a generation after the events of the film, “when science and humanity have evolved to the point where we can direct our own evolution. Genetic engineering has created a world in which parents can determine the future of their children before they are born (the Valids), which by default has created a new underclass, no longer determined by social status or the color of one’s skin (the Invalids).”

As for Seasoned, Mandy Patinkin would have starred alongside his wife, Kathryn Grody. This six-episode series was said to be inspired by their real-life relationship and was produced by Jax Media.
