The hit FX series Shōgun is moving forward with two more seasons, and they are already in development with the original creative team returning to work on them.

During a recent interview with Variety, the showrunner of the series, Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, reveal that they have the storylines for those seasons planned all the way to the end.

Marks admits that it’s going to be a challenge to move forward without any book to guide them, but they are willing and ready to take on the challenge. The first season of the series was based on the epic novel by author James Clavell.

Marks says: “I would be lying if I said we have the answers right now. We have been speaking with one of our historical advisors who we cherish, and talking just about, ‘Tell us a little more about William Adams here and Tokugawa Ieyasu there, and tell us about some new characters and some new things that are going on. And OK, yeah. Interesting.’”

As of right now, the creative team is sifting through all the actual history to find the roadmap for Season 2 and Season 3.

Marks added: “And yeah, that’s really when you have history on your side, what you don’t have on your side is this wonderful book moving forward. There are no roads where we’re going.”

They do know where the story is going. toend, though: “I want to make that point especially clear… that we know how all of this ends in the final moment.

Marks adds: “And once we saw that moment, we said, ‘Oh, now we have to get to that. Now we have to do that’… And we know how it gets to that place… that was like, ‘Oh, wow. Yeah, no, this is the natural end of this.’

“We think we have something that is exciting and surprising. We’re going to go into the room to build that and if we come out the other side and it’s no good, the assurance from FX and everyone is, we’re not going to make it.”

It was previously revealed that series star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada has signed a deal with FX to reprise his role as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the next chapter of the historical epic.

The series was only supposed to be a one-and-done limited series, but after it became a huge hit, FX obviously wanted to continue the series in some way.

Written by Marks and Rachel Kondo, Shōgun is set in the 17th century and takes place across multiple continents. The story follows a shipwrecked English sailor who gets wrapped up in the blood-splattered chessboard of feudal Japanese politics.
