Over the years, video game soundtracks have continued to become more and more popular, with some of the larger franchises having whole-ass tours with full orchestras. Final Fantasy and The Legend of Zelda to name a couple. And now surprisingly, Sonic the Hedgehog.

A Sonic Symphony y’all.

I thought this was some type of joke. But it’s true.

Now. As amazing as some of the Sonic classics sound played by an orchestra, I do find it a little strange that these concerts are…orchestral. Because, with the exception of Sonic Colours and Sonic Frontiers, Sonic soundtracks generally are not symphonic. This isn’t to say can’t be played as such. The trailer above does mention that there will be a rock band too, which is cool. But having the whole gig be played a live band would have been more in keeping with the general vibe of the Sonic the Hedgehog soundtracks. But I guess that it’s far easier to hire orchestras for these types of things than it is a band. And there is probably a better sense of consistency if local orchestras are being used in each country – given the precise nature of an orchestra versus a band. No disrespect to anybody reading this who is in a band.

HENNYWAY.

I adore orchestras. I’m all for any musicians getting paid. I would still very much like to attend this shit. And I intend to try and get me a ticket.

The ‘World Tour’ in the title is the the new definition of World Tour, which simply refers to any performance visiting more than one country. Because, look at this.

London, Barbican Hall
September 16, 2023

Los Angeles, Dolby Theatre
September 30, 2023

Yep. Just two dates. Maybe more will be added depending on how demand goes for these. But it seems really strange to announce a World Tour with only two dates. Surely, four dates could have been announced, with stops in New York and Tokyo. But I’m going to assume there are financial and logistical reasons as to why a Sonic Symphony World Tour got announced with just two dates.

If you can’t make it to either London or L.A., but are holding out hope that a gig closer to you gets announced, the official Sonic Symphony website as a mailing list you can join to be notified of new dates and the like.
