Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) has teamed up with Jerome Wu, who worked on World of Warcraft for an epic new sci-fi space opera franchise titled Space Nation. The franchise is being developed as a TV series, a video game, and a series of animated shorts.

Space Nation will launch as a “massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), where players assume the roles of ship captains, embarking on an epic journey to unravel the mysteries of the Telikos Cluster and immerse themselves in the unfolding grand space opera.”

The story is set in a universe inhabited by alien species and driven by three main factions with distinct ideologies and goals.

The online game’s alpha test will launch in August 2023 and is set for a commercial launch in the second quarter of 2024. That game will be followed by the TV series, animated shorts as well as spinoff games.

Emmerich and Wu are also working on the project with Tony Tang, who worked on the online game Warframe, and Marco Weber, who was a producer on Emmerich’s 1999 sci-fi film The Thirteenth Floor. The project launched with a $50 million budget.

Emmerich said in a statement: “Hollywood’s increasing interest in video games reflects a wider recognition of gaming’s popularity and storytelling potential. The expansive universe we’re building in Space Nation is a tremendous opportunity to captivate audiences wherever they consume entertainment with innovative new forms of storytelling.”

Jerome Wu, CEO and co-creator of Space Nation added: “The landscape of entertainment is evolving rapidly, and we see an incredible opportunity to redefine its boundaries. With our collaborative efforts, we aim to transform the way content is consumed, shared, and experienced.”

There’s still a lot we don’t know about Space Nation, but it sounds like it could be a fun and interesting project. It’ll be interesting to see if it actually ends up being fully realized.
