A new Summer 2023 promo shot of Perfume [Left to Right: Nocchi, a-chan, Kashiyuka] in pastel colour pleated tulle dresses.

So, it’s looking like “Moon” is gonna be Perfume’s next main single after all. It’s crazy how quick Perfume shit turns around now, and we’re seeing it happen across J-Pop. Before, we’d get a snippet of a song for a show or a TV commercial, and then it would be a month until we got a release date for the single. And then another month until it released. But Perfume said BISH. New single, “Moon”. BASH. Single is releasing in September. BOSH. We gon’ perform it on TV in a couple of days.

Perfume look good in this new promo shot. It’s nice to see the shoes actually match the outfits. And this is quite possibly the only instance where a-chan has out-served Nocchi and Kashiyuka. Hair, make-up, dress silhouette. She got a whole different level of attention and care to the others.

a-chan is the one member of Perfume who seems to change some element of her look the most. Nothing about her look has really cemented as strongly as Nocchi’s hair and wearing shorts, or Kashiyuka and her long hair; so a-chan is able to play with that. ‘The thing’ for Plasma eventually become her having braids. And I think ‘the thing’ this time around is going to be a-chan showing more of her shoulders and her arms – which are parts of her body that she doesn’t usually show. But the cut of her dress in the promo shot exposes them. In an announcement video for FNS Kayousai she was wearing a dress (Dolce & Gabanna *Sighs in disappointment*) showing shoulders arms and décolage. And earlier today she did an Instagram Live wearing a fitted vest, showing shoulders and arms. So a-chan is definitely feeling herself at the moment and it’s great to see. I’ve always got a sense that a-chan was either not comfortable with her body or was self conscious about wearing certain things, which is completely understandable and VERY relatable. It’d be great if this shift in a-chan manifested into having a bigger impact on Perfume’s overall style, which is in dire need of a refresh. Because the stage outfits have reached peak ugly now. And as much as I like the new promo shot, it is very ‘Seen Perfume do this before’. It’s basically what they wore for Reframe and what they wore when performing “Flow” on the Plasma tour, but in different colours.

HENNYWAY.

“Moon” releases physically and digitally on September 6, 2023.
