Oh, look. It’s me with another Perfume Closet post.
I continue to be fascinated by Perfume having a clothing line and that it’s still going. I really would like to know how well it sells. Surely they’re making enough money from it to keep it going. Especially as it always tends to release ahead of a tour and always comes with a range of smaller accessories which could easily be merch. This whole collection is pretty much merch.
As is the case with previous collections, different ranges and outfit combinations are inspired by looks Perfume have worn in music videos. And the two main songs and look combos here are “Moon” and “Mugen Mirai”. With a couple of pieces which feature a monochrome version of the triangle print dresses Perfume wore in the “1mm” music video and the album shoot for LEVEL3.
Are Perfume’s team reading my posts? Because for the last two Perfume Closet collections, my takes were that they felt more like items for fans who wanted song specific looks to wear for their dance covers and to attend Perfume concerts in, rather than things to be worn day-to-day. Because who is meeting their homegirls for drinks in the “Spinning World” dresses? Or pulling up to working in them “Cling Cling” outfits?
This Perfume Closet collection seems to lean a lot more into things you could wear day-to-day wear. The last Perfume Closet collection I recall where this was a clear focus was the fourth collection—but so much of it was dusty. And because none of the looks were based on Perfume music videos, I just didn’t see the point in it, when you could buy much nicer stuff at a better price point ANYWHERE else. So it’s cool to see a Perfume Closet collection which balances identifiable Perfume looks with things which can be worn day-to-day. Although the price point for some of it still seems high for what it is.
The “Moon” and “Mugen Mirai” looks from head-to-toe actually look like something somebody could just wear out and about. Ignore the promo shots, because them boots be fucking up everything. And ignore Nocchi’s look too—which seems the least day-to-day friendly of the three. And what also helps, is that whilst the looks are split between layered tops and bottoms, each piece could easily be worn with something else—which was harder to do with pieces from the eighth Perfume Closet collection which featured the outfits from “Spinning World”.
And with this mix ‘n’ matching in mind, it’s a shame that we didn’t get looks in the video or a look book which shows some of these items being worn with other things. This Perfume’s closet collection is one of the most mix ‘n’ matchable, and I think Perfume’s team missed a trick by not showcasing that. Because some of the items on their own are far more fashionable paired with something else than they are when worn with the full set.
Although some Perfume fans with COIN should ask themselves whether they want to drop money on those “Moon” pieces or just cop some Issey Miyake.
I’m a bit baffled by the choice to not put “Moon” in the promo video though. Seemed like a very obvious thing to do.
