The Oldboy remastered theatrical release date has been set by distributor Neon. Park Chan-Wook‘s classic neo-noir mystery thriller will return to theaters on August 16, 2023.

Why is Oldboy returning to theaters?

Last year, Neon announced it had landed Oldboy’s distribution rights, and revealed a restored version would hit theaters for its 20th anniversary. Ticketing information isn’t available yet, but Neon will likely release more information as the release date gets closer.

The original film — released on November 21, 2003 — didn’t receive a huge theatrical run during its initial release. This time around, though, it’s almost guaranteed to make a splash.

Oldboy is the second installment in Park Chan-wook’s “Vengeance” trilogy, which also encompasses 2002’s Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and 2005’s Lady Vengeance. Not only considered one of the best revenge thrillers of all time, Oldboy is widely regarded as one of the best films of all time.

“Dae-Su is an obnoxious drunk bailed from the police station yet again by a friend,” reads the official synopsis of the movie. “However, he’s abducted from the street and wakes up in a cell, where he remains for the next 15 years, drugged unconscious when human contact is unavoidable, otherwise with only the television as company. And then, suddenly released, he is invited to track down his jailor with a denouement that is simply stunning.”
