There was an interesting scene featured in the recently released trailer for Venom: The Last Dance which seems to retcon the events in the post-credits scene for Venom: Let There Be Carange and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In the Let There Be Carnage post-credits scene, Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) was transported from his universe to Earth-616, which is the Marvel Cinematic Universe and there was a new report talking about Spider-Man and Venom showing interest in him by licking the TV screen.
This seemed to set the stage for Spider-Man and Venom to come face to face. Then there was the post-credits for No Way Home which saw Eddie and Venom at a bar on Earth-616 and in the scene, Venom left a piece of himself in that universe before Eddie suddenly vanished and went back to where he came from.
Ted Lasso‘s Cristo Fernández was the bartender in that scene. All of these events seemed to set up Spider-Man coming across the symbiote in Spider-Man 4.
But, in the trailer for The Last Dance, we see Chiwetel Ejiofor’s mystery character at the bar with Fernández and he is capturing that lone piece of Venom, which pretty much retcons Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s post-credits scene.
This makes absolutely no sense, but this is Sony Pictures for you! They throw stuff out there and then they don’t really properly follow through with anything.
Maybe Ejiofor’s character has the power to travel between worlds, which isn’t likely. Sony just seems to be backtracking and making it so that Venom was never really on Earth-616.
Who knows if the creative team will even try to explain this away? This is just a weird thing to do that is leaving fans confused.
What are your thoughts on all this?
