It’s been confirmed that Nicolas Cage is officially set to star in the live-action Spider-Man Noir series set up at MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video.

Cage previously confirmed he was in talks to join the series, but at the time we had no idea if he would actually take the gig or not, so it’s pretty exciting to learn that fans will see Cage as the live-action Spider-Man Noir!

As you know, the actor voiced this character in the animated film Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. The big announcement was made ahead of Amazon’s upfront presentation to advertisers in New York on Tuesday.

Vernon Sanders, head of television for Amazon MGM Studios said in a statement: “Expanding the Marvel universe with ‘Noir’ is a uniquely special opportunity and we are honored to bring
this series to our global Prime Video customers.”

He added: “The extremely talented Nicolas Cage is an ideal choice for our new superhero and the
accomplished producing team with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, and the incredible team at
Sony is dedicated to expanding this franchise in the most authentic way.”

Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios added: “We are absolutely thrilled to have Nicolas Cage starring in this series! No one else could bring such pathos, pain, and heart to this singular character.

She continued: “Along with our brilliant producers and partners at Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, we couldn’t ask for a better team to explore this reimagining of such an iconic character in Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters.”

The project is being developed by The Punisher writer and producer Steve Lightfoot as the co-showrunner and he is joined by Oren Uziel, who is a writer on the project and will serve alongside Lightfoot as co-showrunner. Harry Bradbeer will executive produce and direct the first two episodes.

The series will be set in 1930s New York City, and it will follow the adventures of this fan-favorite Spider-Man variant that’s ready to take on the criminal underworld in his signature noir style. It was previously reported that the show will be set in its own universe, and the main character will not be Peter Parker.

In this noir-inspired world, in the comics Peter Parker takes on the mantle of Spider-Man, but with a distinctively cool twist. Clad in a trench coat and fedora, Spider-Man Noir fights crime in the shadows of New York City, navigating a landscape filled with corruption and danger.

The character’s design and narrative draw heavily from the film noir genre, incorporating elements of detective fiction and a morally ambiguous atmosphere. Throughout his adventures, Spider-Man Noir confronts a rogues’ gallery of villains.

When previously talking about playing the character, Cage said, “It’s no secret that I love the character.” He also described the character as a “mash up of sorts,” one that was inspired by Golden Age actors like Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, and Humphrey Bogart.

The actor said: “I can combine my favorite golden age performances — i.e. Robinson, Cagney, Bogart — with a character that is, I guess, widely considered [to be] Stan Lee’s masterpiece. I see it as a kind of foray into a pop art mash up of, sort of, a [Jungian] Lichtenstein, mash up by way of Bogart and Cagney.

The role will mark the first regular television role of Cage’s career.
