Character creation is one of my favorite parts of playing a tabletop RPG. There are so many possible combinations of races, classes, and attributes to play with. But when it comes to backstory and building a personality, many characters are left with superficial details at best. For some players, this works just fine and they enjoy developing the character more through game play with the group. But for others, creating the character backstory can be challenging and may even feel impossible.
A new supplement available on DriveThruRPG has you covered. Creation Myths by gothHoblin challenges you with a series of prompts to really delve into your character and what makes them tick. The guide will take you through 12 sections with each one full of questions to answer about your character. There are a lot of different approaches you can take. You can attempt to answer every question, you can roll random questions to answer, or you can pick and choose which ones suit your character best. Some questions are simple and others will require an entire story to be told, so it is recommended you keep some kind of journal as you go through it all.
I think this sounds like a really fun way to develop characters for any gaming system. This could be useful for DMs as well when creating big bads or even just for those NPCs your players randomly decided they would die for. The guide says it can be used for new or already played characters, so this could be a fun way to hone in on a character if you are having a hard time getting their personality right. These questions can be applicable to characters across many different gaming systems, this is definitely not limited to Dungeons & Dragons 5e.
