Actor, writer, and comedian Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, Welcome to Chippendales) made his MCU debut in 2021 as Kingo in the not-so-fan-favorite flick Eternals. But if the rumors are true, we may see him jump into the DC universe as the character Booster Gold in the upcoming series that is in the works under James Gunn, which was announced at the start of last year.
According to Nexus Point News, Nanjiani has been cast as Michael John Carter in the upcoming DCU show. The outlet previously reported that Gunn and Peter Safran had tapped Danny McBride, John Carcieri and Jeff Fradley, the creative team behind the HBO Max Original series The Righteous Gemstones, to work on the show as well. This may lend some credence to a previous rumor that the team’s frequent collaborator Jody Hill (The Righteous Gemstones, Eastbound and Down, Vice Principals) was hired as director/showrunner.
If it is accurate, we can expect James Gunn to confirm fairly soon… maybe at Comic-Con?
Gunn recently shot down a report that production was set to commence this month, but he did reveal that “most” of the DCU-based shows currently in the pipeline have set their creative teams. I’m sure we will know a whole lot more in a couple of weeks.
This is pretty different from the casting rumor that was reported a few weeks ago, which claimed that Dylan Playfair (Descendants), Fionn Whitehead (Dunkirk), and Patrick Schwarzenegger (Gen V) had all screen-tested for the role of Booster, and said it was down to those three. But I have a lot of trust in Gunn that he is a great creator, and however he got to the decision, he is making the right casting choice for his projects.
If this turns out to be true, and Nanjiani is DC’s new Booster Gold, are you excited about this casting news?
