In a bidding competition, Deadline brings word that Netflix has successfully won the North American distribution rights to Todd Haynes‘ upcoming romantic drama titled May December, which is being led by Oscar winners Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman. The streamer’s acquisition deal of $11 million comes on the heels of May December’s world premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, where it was given an eight-minute standing ovation.

What May December is About?

“Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, a married couple buckles under the pressure when an actress arrives to do research for a film about their past,” reads the synopsis.

In the film, Moore portrays the role of Gracie Atherton-Yoo, who got involved in a scandalous relationship with an underage teenager. After serving time for her part in the affair, she eventually married said teenager and raised a family with them. Meanwhile, Portman plays the character of Elizabeth Berry — the actress who’ll portray Gracie in the film. Joining them are Charles Melton, Piper Curda, Elizabeth Yu, Gabriel Chung, Cory Michael Smith, D.W. Moffett, and Lawrence Arancio.

May December is directed by Carol filmmaker Todd Haynes from a screenplay written by Samy Burch. It is produced by Portman, Will Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, Christine Vachon, Pamela Koffler, Sophie Mas, Grant S. Johnson, and Tyler W. Konney. It is a production by Gloria Sanchez, Killer Filler Films, Project Infinity, and Taylor & Dodge, with the latter two also serving as financiers.
