Following the success of docudrama shows such as The Last Czars and African Queens, Netflix is taking on one of history’s most famous figures, Alexander The Great. This docudrama series will be a big-budget retelling of the life of the king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon.
The working title for the series is Alexander the Great and the project has been in production in Morocco since last summer. The series is being developed by showrunner Tony Mitchell (Miss America) and Hugh Ballantyne, who is directing the dramatized sections. The series will feature both documentary and scripted elements.
Alexander the Great is widely considered to be one of history’s greatest and most successful military commanders and by the age of 30 had created one of the largest empires in history, stretching from Greece to northwest India. He left a major cultural legacy and his tactics have been studied for generations.
There have been a lot of Alexander the Great projects made over the years, but I like what Netflix has been doing with these docudramas, and I’m confident that this is going to be a great retelling of his story.
