Michael Fassbender is officially set to star in George Clooney’s upcoming espionage thriller series The Agency, which is a remake of the French political drama series The Bureau.

Michael Fassbender is now confirmed to star in the series, which ws previously titled The Department. The actor will also be an executive producer on the show.

The series follows Martian (Fassbender), “a covert CIA agent ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London Station. When the love he left behind reappears, romance reignites.

“His career, his real identity and his mission are pitted against his heart; hurling them both into a deadly game of international intrigue and espionage.”

Chris McCarthy, President/CEO, of Showtime and Paramount Media explained that the series “will follow in the great tradition of Homeland, one of the most successful and brand-defining shows at Showtime.

“Just as Homeland elevated global espionage to The Department will take viewers even deeper into a world of intrigue and subterfuge with complicated characters who struggle with their own demons as they fight existential threats to the nation and the world.”

Alex Berger, President and Executive Producer at The Originals Productions added: “We are delighted to extend The Bureau’s DNA through The Department for Showtime with our friends at MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios.

“The Originals Productions (TOP), Federation and Paramount are taking our franchise to the next level, making a new high-stake international espionage show set today in a very complex geopolitical environment.”

Fassbender most recently wrapped production on Steven Soderbergh’s feature Black Bag with Cate Blanchett.

Joe Wright will direct and executive produce the series. The Agency will premiere on Paramount+ with Showtime later this year.
