The Boys universe has been expanding with multiple spinoff shows and several months ago, The Boys: Mexico was announced.

In a recent interview with EW, series creator Eric Kripke offered an update on that project and we’ve still got a long way to go before it gets made.

The series will be produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. It was also reported that Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer is attached to write the project. He most recently wrote the screenplay for the DC film Blue Beetle.

Gael García Bernal also confirmed that he’s working on the new spinoff series, which is set in Mexico. As for the current status of the project, Kripke says we’re still “a while away from that coming to fruition.”

He added: “They are still making the deal with the writer for the pilot. He has an amazing pitch, and we all giggle and think about how fun it would be. But there are a lot of hurdles for that show before it’s a real show.

Kripke continued: “He’s got to write an amazing pilot, he’s probably got to write an amazing episode 2. I think he can and he will, but we’re a while away from truly starting to drop in the Easter eggs and the setups and stuff.”

According to Kripke one of the main things they need to see is if the show is strong enough to stand on its own as if the main series didn’t exist.

Kripke went on to explain: “I really don’t want people to feel they have to watch one [show] to understand the other. I never want it to feel like homework or mandatory viewing. I think that’s hurt Marvel in a certain amount of ways, and I don’t want to do that.

“I want you to watch both shows. It certainly expands your enjoyment and experience of both shows because you understand some of the backstory of where things came from, but by no means do you have to.”

Kripke went on to talk about The Boys and reiterated that he knows how he wants to end the series, saying: “I have an ending in mind for The Boys. We’ll see how long it takes to get there.

“And then Gen V is its own animal that will have its own ending. They inform each other, but we let each one breathe on its own.”

As long as the creative team behind this franchise keep pumping out great and insane stories, people are going to continue to watch and join in on the fun.
