A pile of colourful floppy discs. With one pink disc with a label on it, which features the cover art for the Beyoncé x Armand van Helden Random J Mashup. The cover art of which features a shot of Beyoncé sat on a giant disco ball, whilst wearing a large pink headpiece. The shot is from the July 2022 issue of British Vogue.

There’s Cowboy Carter now. Yes. But I’m still stuck on Renaissance. I have never worn a Beyoncé album out like this before. It’s crazy. And I’m still finding myself doing mashups of songs from it. So here’s a “Break My Soul” mashup for the Summer. I actually made this back in 2023, I just didn’t share it. Sitting on material for ages is something Beyoncé and I have in common it seems.

If you’re an old bitch, you’ll recognise this song from one of two decades. Or maybe even both if you an OLD old bitch.

Armand van Helden and Duane Harden’s “U Don’t Know Me” was my jam as a kid. There is no faulting the groove on this song. And whilst I probably wasn’t super aware of it at the time, I think the lyrics also spoke to me too, as I was always misunderstood and being told who I am by people that didn’t actually know who I was—something I still have to deal with to this day.

My journey with “Break My Soul” sure is something. I went from not really being sold on the song, to then really liking, to then playing the absolute shit out of it. Even now, it’s still the song on Renaissance I play the most alongside “Virgo’s Groove”. It may have even surpassed “Virgo’s Groove” on the play count. There is just something about “Break My Soul” that works for so many different moods. Whether I’m pissed off, feeling good, not liking myself, liking myself, over it, into it, feeling pussy, feeling cunt—the song just works.
