Upon my first top-to-bottom run through Unspoiled’s soundscapes, I was struck with the impression that these boys had fallen in love with music from every corner of the world. From the ravishing sitar-like arpeggios in the mid-tempo lead track Stellar and through Psychokinesis‘s windup toy shuffle and interlude Sundown by keyboardist Daiki Chiba that drips with dreamy reverse delay effects, the album opens with dashes of color, like a hypnotic spell.
As we make our way into the eponymous night, Green Flash and Signal brilliantly weave together the punchy rhythms from bassist Masanori Seki and drummer Hidetomo Masuda, laced with funky chops by guitarist Yuki Hasebe. Leo Uchida’s vocal palette adds the perfect accent for each song. He’s mastered literally everything: old-school hip hop rhymes in Amber, 90s Jpop a la TM Revolution in PULSE, and a breathtaking transformation in GAS from The Beatles’ Lennon in Strawberry Fields Forever to Nirvana’s Cobain in Breed.
Despite, the polyrhythms and layers of instrumentation, the scenery never feels cramped. The album cuts would feel right at home as the soundtrack at a fashionable salon, coffee shop, or boutique in Tokyo or Los Angeles, where stimuli from all directions constantly vie for our attention.
And at last, papaya, Fuurai, and Meimetsu bring Unspoiled full circle. With hints of smooth jazz, 80s Japanese city pop, and even a bit of Red Hot Chili Peppers, the ending leaves us with a sense of mystique. How will Kroi further expand its creative arsenal? We can’t help but wonder, but these 14 tunes will surely hold us over until the group’s next big splash!
