As we expected, Deadpool & Wolverine isn’t going to by the last time we see Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman play these Marvel characters! The dynamic duo will eventually return to the MCU, and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is already talking to them about their future.
During a recent interview with Collider, Feige was asked about Reynolds and Jackman’s future in the MCU and he responded:
“It’s definitely, ‘Let’s get through this.’ But as we sit here talking, and the movie comes out in a week, and the movie’s been finished for a couple of weeks, there’s certainly been a lot of discussions of, ‘That was fun. What should we do next?'”
It’ll be interesting to see what Marvel does with these characters moving forward. Deadpool & Wolverine is said to be a standalone film, but the events in it will also send ripples through the larger MCU. What those ripples are have yet to be seen.
But, with Deadpool & Wolverine expected to be a massive box office hit for Marvel and Disney, you can bet your ass that they are going to want to keep playing with these characters! We just don’t know what that will look like yet.
When previously talking about the upcoming Marvel movie, Feige called it the “most wholesome R-rated movie anybody could ever see.”
Feige was asked if Deadpool & Wolverine was the “beginning of an edgier era” for the MCU, he responded: “I think we’ve been edgy in the past, but my favorite thing is that we span all types of genres and tones.
“I think it gets a lot of attention that this is our first R-rated movie, but it is the third R-rated Deadpool movie, so we wanted to stay true to what Ryan has built over those last couple of movies and we weren’t going to undo that.”
He continued: “I will say, Hugh and Ryan have talked about this, and I think people can tell from the trailer and from the press tour so far, yes, it’s R-rated, yes there’s some language and blood, but the film is incredibly emotional.”
He goes on to explain: “I keep calling it the most wholesome R-rated film that anybody can ever see. It really is a celebration of friendship and family and of found family.
“I don’t want to overdo it, but for all the R-rated raunchiness that gets attention, when people see the movie, it’s going to be about how heartfelt it is; in my opinion much more than the first two Deadpool films.
“That’s what I’m really excited about, once people get past the ‘F’ words and the R-rating, to see how sweet it is.”
The film takes place six years after the events of Deadpool 2. Wade has hung up his uniform, he’s no longer dating Vanessa, and he’s working as a used car salesman.
While celebrating his birthday with his friends, agents of the Time Variance Authority pluck Wade out of his reality and bring him to meet their boss, Mr. Paradox, who informs Deadpool that there’s a bigger fate in store for him.
This is the start of a grand multiverse time-jumping adventure with Wolverine as they find themselves facing off with the villain Cassandra Nova.
The confirmed cast for the movie also includes Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin and Stefan Kapicic as Vanessa and Colossus, Matthew Macfadyen as a TVA Agent, and Leslie Uggams as Blind Al.
They are joined by Brianna Hildebrand and Shioli Kutsuna, who will also return to the franchise as Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s girlfriend Yukio. It was previously confirmed that Jennifer Garner will return as Elektra in the movie.
Deadpool & Wolverine will hit theaters on July 26th!
