Kevin Costner has played historical figures, original characters, cowboys, cops, and more, and one of his memorable roles was that of Superman’s father, Jonathan Kent, in the 2013 DC flick Man of Steel.

While it may have sounded cool to take a role in a superhero movie, it turns out that Costner was kind of bummed when he learned that Clark’s dad doesn’t actually have any powers.

In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Costner explained:

“It’s just my luck to be in a superhero movie and be the only person that’s normal. I was like, ‘Really? I can’t fly? And I can’t put my first through the wall? Maybe I should have read this thing closer. I’m a farmer?’ So I looked at that and I said, ‘Ok, I can be that.’ I thought it was rooted in doubt. But there was no doubt that he puts his hand up and says, ‘Stay there’ to his son.”

So he did get to show some heroism after all, but he didn’t get to fly around while doing it. He played that role well, and it was too bad that he didn’t get to play it longer.

Costner can be seen in his latest passion project Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1, which is now playing in theaters.
