「雷鳴」 (Raimei)
“Thunderclap”
It’s hard for me to talk about this episode because, much like last week, the larger context resides within the pages of the manga. But let’s try and talk about the things that happened in this episode.
First of all, Toji finding an ounce of compassion serves as a revealing plot twist that not many people see coming. The way this is revealed in the manga serves as an intriguing page-turner that makes you gasp out loud. Why did a corpse suddenly find compassion for his own blood?
As a refresher, JJK, especially this season has expanded upon the idea of a soul and body being interlinked. Mahito especially mentioned that the type of connection varies depending on how much curse energy you possess as well as the type of ability you use. Jogo gives another example in this episode. He wouldn’t dare play a tug-of-war of domains with Sukuna. That being said, Toji finds himself in a precarious position. His soul has taken over the body of the young chap that granny uses as a sacrificial lamb in order to bring Toji back through a seance. Her idea was that the seance would be broken once the curse energy ran out. To my understanding at least.
However, that is not going to happen since Toji never had any curse energy to begin with. So now, his soul is inside a body that only seeks only to kill, because Toji’s soul has been reduced to its bare bone. So in essence he has gone berserk and only seeks to fight the strongest there is. That’s why almost instinctively he enters the domain upon Megumi opening a small crack to it. He smelled Takoyaki and went in for the kill.
So upon Toji remembering he had a child and seeing him in Megumi, and realizing it’s his child he feels fatherly love for a brief moment, helping him get out of his trance berserk state. In that moment he chooses empathy and off’s himself knowing he is only a soul in a temporary body. Toji has officially suffered two deaths. And his second one redeems him. This sole act is tremendously empathic and in the span of a few seconds, it allows us as the viewers to understand and feel his pain. He very clearly chose to be a better person, would that berserk mode have returned he would have probably killed Megumi without much hesitation. It’s powerful stuff.
So then we continue off towards the fight with Jogo and Sukuna, as the rest of the episode delves into the girls with the camera and those other two people that make their appearance in front of Panda and the coward.
The animation simply goes off and my jaw dropped to the floor.
There’s little to say except that maybe it was a very good fight, the buildings crashing against each other were simply marvelous. Woah is an understatement.
It’s okay because moments before Jogo’s death, Sukuna praises him for being strong, Jogo finds emotion and starts crying, not knowing what it means. Sukuna doesn’t know either. I never liked Jogo, or the bad guys for that matter. I’m starting to turn around however, something about Sukuna in this episode made him really hot.
Who said that?!
Anyway, that’s all for me this week, as I can’t talk about Megumi’s fate, except that his unconscious thanks to that blonde guy. I really hate that blonde guy, just die already. Nanami threw him around quite well but didn’t get the job done apparently.
Okay then – let’s catch JJK next week!
