“Shibuya Incident – Gate, Open”
First of all – I apologize for missing last week’s episode, things got a little hectic here at RC and it was within my duties to oblige, because work has me swamped, I had to pull double duty with my obligations. Bring you coverage? Or help out with RC stuff, it’s one or the other. However, I am here yet another week to bring you double coverage, and rightly so.
It’s a testament to the quality of the anime when episodes seem to fly by, keeping us eagerly engaged. The Shibuya Incident storyline, as expected, stretches across numerous episodes, capturing the complexity of the narrative beats we’d find in a longer manga arc.
While I’m tempted to revisit the manga due to the anime’s brisk pace, the captivating animation keeps me content as an anime-only viewer for now. Last week’s episode plunged us into a subway showdown as Satoru Goujo took on the formidable curses—Jogo, Hanami, and Choso—amidst a throng of civilians. Up above, Yuji joined forces with Mei Mei and Ui Ui to confront a new threat, the transfigured humans heralding the return of Mahito. Yuji’s mission to face this menacing cursed spirit led him to an encounter with an intelligent grasshopper cursed spirit guarding a crucial tool controlling the mysterious veil. With sheer strength, he shattered the veil. However, their reunion below ground unveiled an unsettling disappearance of Mahito and most civilians. In the subway, Jogo, following Geto’s counsel, employed a strategic ploy using civilians to distract Goujo. Goujo, averse to civilian casualties, swiftly countered with his Domain Amplification, culminating in an explosive confrontation.
In this week’s episode, just before the climactic capture of Satoru Gojo with the Prison Realm, we are treated to a captivating flashback. Geto, surrounded by his fellow curses, engages in a game of Mahjong. While the rules of Mahjong may seem complex to the uninitiated, the imagery and symbolism are profound. Much like Mahjong, where players strategize to form specific combinations of tiles, Geto appears to be orchestrating a strategic masterstroke, akin to a “checkmate” in a game of chess.
As the tiles are arranged and decisions are made, it becomes apparent that Geto holds a seemingly unassailable position, much like the mastermind behind the unfolding events. The game of Mahjong becomes a metaphor for his intricate plans, suggesting that he has always held the key to the situation, much like the tiles in his hand. This clever use of Mahjong in the episode not only adds depth to Geto’s character but also underscores the intricate and strategic nature of the overarching narrative. It’s a subtle nod to the power dynamics at play and the intricate web of schemes woven by the characters in Jujutsu Kaisen.
The episode beautifully demonstrates the storytelling prowess that keeps viewers returning week after week. Goujo’s predicament is palpable; he refuses to accept civilian casualties, pushing his adversaries to manipulate him further into despair. Moments of triumph, like Goujo’s relentless power against Hanami, are juxtaposed with the arrival of Mahito and the chilling reveal of their ultimate plan. Goujo’s use of the Domain Expansion: Infinite Void, lasting a mere 0.2 seconds, showcases his unparalleled strength in eliminating transfigured humans while hinting at the hidden depths of domain expansion.
As the narrator hints at the psychological impact of being inside a domain expansion, we learn that society eventually recovers from the incident, though the details remain elusive. Geto’s reappearance jolts Goujo as their shared memories come rushing back, culminating in Goujo’s entrapment within the Prison Realm. The revelation that Geto is not who he seems adds a layer of complexity, with the true mastermind behind these dark machinations revealed.
I can hardly contain my excitement for next week’s episode! Jujutsu Kaisen has consistently delivered thrilling and thought-provoking storytelling, and each week leaves us craving more. The way the plot is thickening, the characters are evolving, and the stakes are escalating—it’s like a rollercoaster ride that I never want to end. With the captivating revelations and intense battles we’ve witnessed recently, I can only imagine what’s in store for us next. The anticipation is palpable, and I’m eagerly counting down the days until I can immerse myself in the world of curses, sorcery, and jaw-dropping surprises once again.
With stakes at an all-time high, we can’t help but eagerly anticipate the next episode, as the chessboard of this intricate narrative continues to unfold.
