When I think of Hot Wheels, I think of fun, creativity, and imagination! I loved playing with Hot Wheels when I was growing up and I even have a small collection of them. Hot Wheels are just cool!

Well, about a year ago it was announced that J.J. Abrams was developing a Hot Wheels movie for Warner Bros., and when it was first announced it was described as “a high-throttle actioner, which will showcase some of the world’s hottest and sleekest cars, monster trucks and motorcycles.”

There really aren’t a lot of details to share on the movie, but now we have some insight on the tone of the film, and it’s really not what I expected from a Hot Wheels movie. Abrams recently shared that it is going to be an “emotional and grounded and gritty” film. Here’s his exact quote from the New Yorker:

“For a long time, we were talking to Mattel about Hot Wheels, and we couldn’t quite find the thing that clicked, that made it worthy of what Hot Wheels — that title — deserved. Then we came up with something . . .  emotional and grounded and gritty.”

I mean, I’m interested to see what they’ve come up with for the story, but those words aren’t words that I’d use to describe Hot Wheels. I don’t know any Hot Wheels fans that would describe the movie like that! Hot Wheels are cool, fun, vibrant, and exciting. There’s also nothing grounded about them! Kids let their imaginations go wild with Hot Wheels! They didn’t imagine anything being grounded when playing with those toy cars!

We’ll just have to wait and see what they come up with. Screenwriters Dalton Leeb and Nicholas Jacobson-Larson have been working on a script for the movie, but there’s no completed script yet.

What do you think about the tone that the Hot Wheels movie is going for? When I think of a Hot Wheels movie, I’m thinking more along the line of Speed Racer.
