Josh Gad recently shared a post on Instagram featuring a photo of an edited script cover for a film that he worked on. He said of the script that it’s “the funniest and best thing [he’s] ever worked on.”

There’s a good chance that this could be a sequel to Spaceballs. The cover of the script, though obscured, claims the material is “based on characters created by Mel Brooks” and it opens on an exterior shot of a “star field.”

That certainly sounds like it could be a Spaceballs sequel to me! If it is, that would be awesome!

Gad said: “Just handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best thing I’ve ever worked on and I am so freaking excited.

“Working with my boys @cubanmissiledh and @benjisamit has been heaven on Earth and many other planets as well. Love you boys!”

Brooks has been teasing a possible Spaceballs sequel for years, and a couple of months ago he participated in a panel at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood after a screening of his 1987 movie Spaceballs.

During the conversation with TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz, Brooks talked about working with George Lucas and how the creator of Star Wars was okay with Brooks making the parody.

The one thing Lucas told Brooks he couldn’t do was make his own Spaceballs merchandise, like toys and stuff, which he never did.

Brooks then contemplated making Spaceballs 2 and if he moved forward with that film he wondered if he would be able to make merch for that movie.

Brooks also talked about his love for the Star Wars franchise, saying: “I loved it. I loved the picture. I thought it was unusual. I thought it was incredibly original and it was a combination of all the things that I loved when I was a kid, like Ivanhoe and Robin Hood.”

He added: “It was kind of like a fairy tale with zaps. A lot of zaps. But it was good. It was a good movie and its heart was in the right place.”

Years ago, Brooks said the sequel would be titled Spaceballs: The Search for More Money. But, we’ll just have to wait and see if this thing actually gets off the ground. I hope it does!
