「未知の敵」 (Michi no Teki)
“The Unknown Enemy”

Three weeks in and safe to say slow burn is going to be name of Helck’s game. Not that it’s a problem mind you – when you’re dealing with two cour affairs stopping to smell the roses is always appreciated – but anyone expecting lots of answers at a breakneck pace had better clamp down on those desires. After all, we haven’t even hit the real twists and turns just yet.

With the three episode honeymoon period now over, if there’s a main takeaway it’s that Helck’s comedy will be an acquired taste. This is one of those series more on allusion and innuendo than outright slapstick, particularly when it comes to Vamirio, her explosive temperament, and the whole gag of Helck being, well, Helck. Hyura’s and Kenros’ feeling out of Vamirio’s non-management origins or Hyura completely missing what makes Helck popular are points enough, where the humour comes more from knowing what say ticks the little fire demon off or knowing the true nature of certain competitors than actually see it happen. It’s pretty much comedy through association, which while able of holding its own, does rely on the audience finding hilarity in it by “getting the joke” versus having it slapped in their face. I fully expect some complaints of boredom as the episodes add up because the strategy Helck is going for is a slow burn, and such progression doesn’t lend well to any expectations of rapid and meaty weekly developments.

Such remarks, however, don’t mean I personally see the series as boring, and part of the reason is the mystery which continues surrounding the base premise. Aside from the sly reveal of Helck being invited to the tournament by Azudora (itself a fairly big deal) there’s also the running theme of other humans being nowhere to be found and Helck continuing to defy any sort of human – or demon – logic. Dangerous miasma turning the wildlife into literal maneaters? Just another walk through the park. Stamina? Who needs that. And let’s not touch on turning picky eaters into eager gourmands. Tack on our mystery angelic knights being just as powerful as promised and fairly safe to say we’re gearing up for a noticeable reveal about present world circumstances before too long.

It’s just a matter of whether such reveal also includes some more tidbits on who Helck is and what exactly he’s after.
