It looks like the director of Godzilla Minus One, Takashi Yamazaki, has found his next film project. It’s being reported that he is looking to helm an adaptation of the manga Barefoot Gen.

This information comes from anime producer, film lecturer, and founder of Gainax Studios Toshio Okada, shared a video for his followers. While talking about the impact of Godzilla Minus One, he spoke about Yamazaki’s career and said the director’s next film will likely act as an adaptation of Barefoot Gen.

This has not been confirmed by Yamazaki, but if it’s true it will be a great project for the filmmaker to take on!

Barefoot Gen is a harrowing and moving manga series created by Keiji Nakazawa, depicting the life of Gen Nakaoka, a young boy living in Hiroshima during World War II.

The story begins with Gen and his family struggling with the daily hardships of war, including food shortages and air raids. Their lives are irrevocably changed when the atomic bomb is dropped on Hiroshima, leading to the deaths of Gen’s father, sister, and younger brother.

As one of the survivors, Gen witnesses the horrifying aftermath of the bombing, grappling with loss, radiation sickness, and the destruction of his city.

The manga tells a powerful story and portrays the resilience and hope of the human spirit amidst unimaginable devastation.

The description for the manga reads: “This harrowing story of Hiroshima was one of the original Japanese manga series. New and unabridged, this is an all-new translation of the author’s first-person experiences of Hiroshima and its aftermath, is a reminder of the suffering war brings to innocent people.

“Its emotions and experiences speak to children and adults everywhere. Volume one of this ten-part series details the events leading up to and immediately following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.”

I hope that this report of Yamazaki directing this movie is true because he is the perfect director for it and he will develop it into a beautiful and heartbreaking film.

There is an anime film adaptation of this story that was directed by Mori Masaki and released in 1983.
