Free Solo directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi are set to direct a film adaptation of Michael Crichton and James Patterson’s novel Eruption.

The film is being pitched as “a large-scale earth-threatening thriller about a volcano explosion in Hawaii.” Crichton spent 20 years working on this book before he passed away.

The description of the book reads: “A history-making eruption is about to destroy the Big Island of Hawaii. But a secret held for decades by the US military is far more terrifying than any volcano.”

There’s no screenwriter attached to the project yet , but the producing team is currently meeting with writing talent. There have also been preliminary meetings with several big stars who might star in a movie.

The film is said to be “architected in the style of Jurassic Park, which also shot in Hawaii and is based on the Crichton novel.”

On top of that, Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi might also be directing a documentary on the life of Crichton.

The directing team previously made the film Nyad, which was released on Netflix. That story followed Diana Nyad’s impossible swim from Cuba to Florida at age 60. The movie starred Annette Bening and Jodie Foster, who both received Oscar nominations.

Eruption seems like it will be anther great project for them. It will be their biggest film to date.
