Former WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther is on the path to becoming one of the top stars in the promotion. Gunther held the Intercontinental Championship for a record-breaking 666 days. He defeated stars like Ricochet, Chad Gable, Braun Strowman, Drew McIntyre, Sheamus, and many more during his dominant reign.
The Ring General’s historic reign came to an end at this year’s WrestleMania 40 when he was defeated by Sami Zayn. Following his loss, Gunther took a short hiatus and entered himself into the King of the Ring tournament. Just like his Intercontinental Championship reign, he dominated the entire tournament and reached the finals.
He defeated WWE legend Randy Orton in the finals to become the 2024 King of the Ring winner. This victory also grants him a shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam. The title is currently held by The Judgment Day member Damian Priest. As Gunther continues on his path to greatness, another Judgement Day member has caught his attention. Former WWE Universal Champion Finn Balor recently expressed his desire to have a match with the former WWE Intercontinental Champion.
Finn Balor names Gunther the best in the world in WWE
Finn Balor recently appeared for an interview on “What’s The Story.” During the show, he was asked about whom he wanted to wrestle in WWE. Balor named Gunther as the star he wanted to face and called him the best in the world.
He stated, “WALTER, GUNTHER, whatever you wanna call him, in my opinion, is probably the best performer on Earth right now. In my opinion, to watch in the ring. I get so oversaturated seeing so much stuff that I just kinda go “ahh cant be arsed watching this”. I’ve not seen it all, but I’ve seen so much. I’m 43 now, so it’s like watching wrestling for 35 years, so it’s rare that I go, “Ah, I’m interested in this,” but when WALTER gets in the ring, I’m interested. I want to see everything that he does.”
He continued, “There’s no bits where I know what he’s going to do for the next five minutes…That’s one of the few matches in my career that I want to have. We tried to set it up right before COVID in NXT UK, then the world had a different plan for us. Then we went different ways, and now, we’re both heels, so I don’t know how that would work. I’ve expressed my opinion to the office that I would love to get that match, and hopefully, we can get it done in the future.”
Fans might remember that both stars were scheduled to face each other at NXT UK TakeOver: Dublin on April 26, 2020. However, the match was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With Balor expressing his desire, it will be interesting to see if WWE plans to schedule a match between them.
