The image above offers us a first look at the high-anticipated horror sequel The Nun 2, which is a film that looks absolutely terrifying. I’m a fan of the Conjuring universe movies, and The Nun 2 looks like this next film is going to be much better than the first one. I’ve already seen footage of it, and I was impressed!
The Nun star Taissa Farmiga is set to reprise her role as Sister Irene, and she will join Storm Reid. In the story, there are a string of murders at the Vatican ,and the church believes the the evil Nun Valak is the cause. So, they call in Sister Irene to help and face off with the Nun again.
In this story, Sister Irene is living this anonymous life in a convent in Italy. Director Michael Chaves explained to EW that “She had this traumatic experience, this huge adventure, and now she wants to live the life of service.” As you might expect, that life service is going to involve more horror as the Demon Nun, the terrifying incarnation of Valak, is now possessing Irene’s friend Maurice, who is portrayed by Jonas Bloquet. The director went on to say:
“Maurice made his way to France and he’s working at this boarding school as kind of a handyman. He has a friendship and a flirtation with one of the teachers there, and you can see him starting to mature, so that’s where our characters start out. But we know from the first film that there’s something terrible inside of him, that Valak escaped within him, and events pull Irene back on this collision course with her old friend.”
When talking about Storm Reid’s character, the director described her character as “a young novitiate, just like Taissa played in the first film.” He continued saying:
“She is a nun in training and she’s debating about whether she’s going to take her vows. She’s at this pivotal point in her life, and she gets pulled along with Irene on this mission, on this journey, hunting down Maurice through these horrible events that happen.”
Actress Bonnie Aarons is also set to reprise her role as the Demon Nun, and when talking about her return, Chaves said: “Bonnie’s incredible. She can really turn it on, she really knows what’s scary, and she’s just so easy. It’s not like she’s always in this dark Nun persona, she’s not the Method Nun.”
The filmmaker also talks about the image above which features the sinister faceless nuns saying: “The faceless nuns are back. That was a fan favorite and also became part of the marketing campaign of the first film. So they’re definitely back in the film. I don’t want to spoil anything else [about them].”
Chaves then goes on to tease that this next movie will also connect to the wider Conjuring cinematic universe, saying:
“Anyone who’s a fan of it knows the timeline and this is definitely part of the timeline. There’s a lot of cool stuff in it. I honestly cannot wait until it comes out so I can just unload all the little Easter eggs that we’ve peppered through the movie.”
The Nun 2 will be released in theaters on September 8th.
