Academy Award-nominated writer and director Paul Schrader’s most recent film, Master Gardener, completes what has been dubbed his “Lonely Man” trilogy. The filmmaker responsible for classics like American Gigolo, his screenplay for Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, and his movies First Reformed and Card Counter, has continued to keep audiences engaged and discussing his work, but one of the first films he wrote, Rolling Thunder, may be getting a revisit of sorts.

Schrader explained to IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast that the film came up in a discussion with director Quentin Tarantino, who is making his much talked-about tenth and possibly final film, The Movie Critic. Tarantino has only said the film is based on “a real critic, but he is not known…and I am not going to tell you more.”

But Paul Schrader says that Tarantino has expressed interest in possibly adding elements of Rolling Thunder to the story. He explained:

“Quentin [Tarantino] — this may have changed — but about a month ago he was making a film, had something to do with filmmaking in the ’70s. And part of this, he’s going to use clips from movies from the ’70s, but he’s also gonna remake movies from the ’70s. And he asked me, ‘Can I redo the ending of “Rolling Thunder?”’ And I said, ‘Yeah, go for it. I’d love to see you redo the ending of “Rolling Thunder.”’ Who knows whether he actually will or not. But it was something that was tickling his imagination in a very Tarantino-esque way.”

That sounds interesting! Whatever Tarantino does, I’m here for it. His films have only gotten better in my opinion, and I can’t wait to see what he does with what may be his final flick. What do you think about the possible incorporation of Rolling Thunder?
