With a name born from “despair and light”, D’ESPAIRSRAY carved out a legacy with powerful live performances and a genre-blending sound that inspired a generation. Fusing nu metal, industrial rock, and a distinctly Japanese gothic aesthetic, they built a style all their own. Now, in 2025, a whole quarter of a century since they first started, they’re making a comeback.
Formed on September 9, 1999, vocalist HIZUMI, guitarist Karyu, bassist ZERO, and drummer TSUKASA quickly rose to prominence in the early 2000s indie scene as D’ESPAIRSRAY.
In 2004, D’ESPAIRSRAY embarked on their first European tour, an unprecedented move for a Japanese band at the time. They paved the way for groups like DIR EN GREY and MUCC, who would later become regulars on the international circuit.
In 2006, they undertook an extensive 14-stop world tour across eight countries in Europe and the Americas. That summer, they became the only Japanese band to perform at one of Germany’s largest metal festivals, “Wacken Open Air”.
In 2008, D’ESPAIRSRAY showcased their evolution with a standout performance at the hide Memorial Summit at Ajinomoto Stadium. That summer, they joined MUCC and “the Underneath” (predecessor to defspiral) on the “Taste of CHAOS” 2008 U.S. tour, earning rave reviews across the two-month run.
In 2009, as they celebrated their 10th anniversary, D’ESPAIRSRAY made their major label debut, sparking high expectations for the next chapter of their career. But in 2010, tragedy struck. Vocalist HIZUMI sustained a vocal cord injury that seriously impacted his ability to sing. Despite a hiatus for treatment, recovery proved challenging. On June 15, 2011, the band made the heartbreaking decision to disband. The news was met with deep sorrow from fans, fellow artists, and industry peers alike.
Three years later, on July 29, 2014, D’ESPAIRSRAY made a surprise guest appearance at Angelo’s “THE INTERSECTION OF DOGMA” event, performing four songs together. Since then, each member has pursued individual projects, making this reunion all the more unexpected and exciting.
Currently, HIZUMI is active as the vocalist for NUL., while Karyu performs with both Angelo (currently on hiatus) and H.U.G. ZERO and TSUKASA are members of THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S. TSUKASA is also pursuing a solo career as an enka singer under the name Mogamigawa Tsukasa. Recently, Karyu, ZERO, and TSUKASA have been performing alongside TAKA of defspiral as part of the project Luv PARADE.
Each member has continued to stay active and creative in their own projects, making their reunion all the more meaningful. We hope fans worldwide can snag tickets to this groundbreaking event this November.
