Cillian Murphy has broken his silence on the highly anticipated Peaky Blinders movie in development at Netflix.
A photo of the script was shared and Murphy confirmed that he is definitely returning as Tommy Shelby, and it came with a note from the actor.
The note says: “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me… It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”
Steven Knight previously said of Murphy, “He definitely is returning for it. We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth.” But it’s great to hear it from Murphy himself.
Murphy has expressed interest in returning previously, saying: “If there’s more story there, I’d love to do it. But it has to be right. Steve Knight wrote 36 hours of television, and we left on such a high. I’m really proud of that last series. So, it would have to feel legitimate and justified to do more.”
Murphy also said: “I have always said that if Knight delivers a script that I know he can deliver, because he is such a phenomenal writer, I’ll be there. … If we want to watch 50-year-old Tommy Shelby, I will be there. Let’s do it.”
Well, that script has been delivered, and it’s great to see that Murphy is excited to return to this role one more time!
Knight talked about the film in the past, saying: “The film, I know exactly what it’s about. And I know what two stories it’s going to tell. What will happen after that, I want that to depend on the film. For all we know somebody is going to pop out – I think I know who it’s going to be.”
I’m excited to see the Peaky Blinders story continue with this movie!
