Figuring out what happened to Fiona in Bodkin can be tough to work out. In season one of this Netflix comedy drama, Fiona never appears as a character in the series, though her actions and whereabouts are a large part of the central investigation. Her connection to other characters, like Teddy, Maeve, and Seamus, are kept secret at the start of the show, but are slowly revealed as Dove, Emmy, and Gilbert unravel the mystery that still lingers unsolved in the eponymous Irish town. Ending spoilers are ahead, so we recommend turning back if you don’t want to know what happens. Here’s an explanation and timeline of what occurred in Fiona’s past in Bodkin.
Why did Fiona leave Seamus in Bodkin?
In Bodkin, Fiona leaves the town to escape from Seamus Gallagher (aka Jack McFadden) and the McAlders crime family, choosing to become a nun at Inis Mac Tíre and eventually dying from childbirth.
The story of Fiona is a tragic one. We learn a lot of details about the circumstances of her escape and death throughout the series, though it’s tough to piece everything together since there are many twists and several lies. But the timeline more or less begins twenty years ago with Fiona being a local school teacher who has a relationship with Seamus and is a caretaker of her student Teddy. However, she is concerned about her boyfriend’s criminal activities, deciding not to tell Seamus about the pregnancy.
These fears are realized when Seamus decides to steal plastic explosives from the McAlders crime family. This leads to an altercation where he kills Oisin McAlder, and he tells his brother Malachy to take Fiona to safety. Sergeant Power, Teddy’s father, decides to help Fiona and Malachy escape, but Fiona doesn’t show up at the meeting point. This leads to a deadly fight between Teddy and Malachy, with Teddy murdering Malachy with a brick.
Instead of fleeing with Malachy, Fiona decides to escape by ship with the aid of Maeve. She comes to the conclusion that the child isn’t safe so long as Seamus is being chased by the McAlders, not to mention his anger issues. According to Maeve in episode six, Fiona wanted to reach Wales, but they stopped at Inis Mac Tíre instead, knowing that Mrs. O’Shea was a nurse and a nun.
Fiona decided to stay at the convent with the beekeeping nuns and eventually gave birth to a boy, but she tragically died during the delivery. To keep the secret of the birth and prevent Seamus from knowing about the boy, Fiona is buried in a grave on the island with only the word “Máthair” on the tombstone. Also, Mrs. O’Shea leaves the convent and adopts the child as Sean O’Shea.
