South Korean films and dramas are based on the themes of fate and finding soulmates. Some of the best shows that feature these themes include Queen of Tears, Crash Landing on You, and Goblin. A few of the storylines consist of characters meeting as kids and falling in love later on in their adulthood. This article looks at some of the most popular Korean films and series which feature the theme of soulmates.

Queen of Tears

Starring Kim Soo-Hyun and Kim Ji-Won, Queen of Tears is one of the best K-dramas of 2024. The story revolves around a married couple, Baek Hyun-Woo and Hong Hae-In. The latter is a chaebol heiress, while her husband is a simple man. After an incident, the two distance themselves from each other. When Hyun-Woo decides to divorce his wife, her health condition changes his plans. Eventually, they find their way to each other. 

Queen of Tears is a perfect example of a soulmate-based storyline. The lead characters have a past connection where Hyun-Woo saved Hae-In’s life in childhood. After several ups and downs, fate brings them together eventually. The series is available to stream on Netflix. 

Crash Landing on You

Crash Landing on You is a classic South Korean drama in which fate brings two soulmates together. Yoon Se-Ri (Son Ye-Jin) belongs to a wealthy family that runs a big company. One day, she participates in a paragliding event but strong winds lead to an accident.

Se-Ri ends up in a jungle in North Korea, where soldier Ri Jung-Hyuk (Hyun Bin) saves her. He brings her home and hides her from his townspeople and other North Korean officers. Slowly, the lead characters fall in love, but their nationalities hinder their relationship. Fans can watch the drama on Netflix.

Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (Goblin)

The story of Guardian: The Lonely and Great God or Goblin revolves around a 939-year-old goblin, Kim Shin (Gong Yoo), looking for his goblin bride. He was cursed decades ago and thus carries an invisible sword pierced through his chest. Only his goblin bride can see it and can remove it so that he can leave the planet peacefully. A high-school student, Ji Eun-Tak (Kim Go-Eun), bumps into Kim Shin and tries to convince him she is the one he is looking for. 

Meanwhile, Grim Reaper (Lee Dong-Wook) searches for Eun-Tak because she is not supposed to be born. However, Kim Shin has saved her in the past, and he has become protective of her. The K-drama further shows the two lead characters going through many hardships that separate them. Yet, fate brings them together every time. The series is available on many streaming platforms, including Netflix and Viki.

Destined With You

Destined With You stars Rowoon as Jang Shin-Yu and Jo Bo-Ah as Lee Hong-Jo. The series revolves around civil servant Hong-Jo, who gets entangled in the life of high-profile lawyer Shin-Yu. Coincidentally, the two share a past life connection. Hong-Jo learns she comes from a line of witches and somehow becomes responsible for lifting Shin-Yu’s curse.

On Netflix, the synopsis reads, “A lawyer bound by a centuries-old curse becomes entangled with a civil servant who holds the key to his freedom — igniting an unexpected romance.”

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo features Lee Sung-Kyung and Nam Joo-Hyuk as lead actors in the series. The plot revolves around weightlifter Bok-Joo and his childhood friend swimmer Joon-Hyeong. While they work towards their career goals, Joon-Hyeong becomes attracted to his friend. Despite hardships, destiny brings the two soulmates together.

The synopsis reads, “A competitive swimmer crosses paths with his childhood friend, a rising weight-lifting star, and realizes that she has a secret crush on his cousin.” Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo is available on several streaming channels, including Viki and Netflix.
