Dance unit ATARASHII GAKKO! unveiled digital single Toryanse on January 26, pushing onward in the quest to spread its unpredictably zany antics to a ballooning international audience. As with prior releases, Toryanse combines rapid-fire choreography with catchy melodies that remains digestible even to those without Japanese fluency. The single can be streamed on major outlets, including Spotify and Apple Music. The official video is available now on YouTube.
Loosely based on the traditional Japanese children’s song by the same name, Toryanse is a call to discover your own path in life, no matter how dubious the odds or detractors standing before your goal. The original Toryanse from centuries ago is widely documented as an exchange between a shrine guard and a child nearing coming-of-age, aligning closely with the “find your way” values heralded by ATARASHII GAKKO!
Consistent with the theme, the video dowses with shots of members SUZUKA, KANON, MIZYU, and RIN in patched winter coats, blitzing through an Edo-era Japanese home. They prance down corridors, cook porridge on an open stove, and lay down rhymes while throwing up laundry on bamboo clotheslines. Starkly contrasting the old-timey visuals, the modern EDM beats delightfully captures the foursome’s idiosyncratic spirit: “Be yourself”.
We can’t get enough of ATARASHII GAKKO! and look forward to catching them at Coachella! Stay tuned for more this year from JROCK NEWS!
