Lucasfilm has had a bit of fun playing with a younger version of Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars shows they have been developing. Filmmaking technology is getting really great at de-aging actors and seeing young Luke back in action was so cool! But, as you might imagine, it’s a little weird for Mark Hamill.

During a recent interview with Esquire, Hamill said: “It is unusual to see yourself like that. It can’t be cheap.” The big question is, will we see Luke again in any future projects? There’s a whole story to tell with him between the events of Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

It’s very possible that we could see Luke Skywalker again. Hamill doesn’t think Lucasfilm needs to tell those stories, but if they do, he thinks that they should recast the role with an age-appropriate actor. He said:

“People say, ‘Oh, now you’re going to be able to do a whole series of Luke post-Return of the Jedi.’ I said, ‘I don’t think so.’ First of all, they don’t need to tell those stories, but if they do, they could get an age-appropriate actor.”

It wouldn’t be the first time that Lucasfilm has recast a Star Wars legacy actor, but it’s something they don’t do often. As of right now, it seems like they are content with the de-aging tech, but if they did want to tell a whole new story for the character, I wonder what they would do. Would Lucasfilm recast or would they go all out with the de-aging tech? Maybe we’ll find out one day.

When Hamill was asked if he’d be open to reprising his role in the upcoming Rey Skywalker movie, potentially as a Force Ghost, he said: “One thing you learn working for Lucasfilm: everything is confidential. So, if I were involved, I wouldn’t be able to tell you. And if I were not involved, I wouldn’t be able to tell you. So, I don’t know. We’ll all find out together, I guess.”
