Netflix has revealed the Painkiller release date and a batch of first look photos of the upcoming limited series, which is an examination of America’s opioid crisis and inspired by real events.

When does Painkiller come out on Netflix?

Comprised of six one-hour episodes, the Netflix series will star Uzo Aduba, Matthew Broderick, Taylor Kitsch, Dina Shihabi, and West Duchovny. Described as “an examination of crime, accountability, and the systems that have repeatedly failed hundreds of thousands of Americans,” the Painkiller release date is set for Thursday, August 10. It was filmed in Toronto, Canada.

“A fictionalized retelling of events, Painkiller is a scripted limited series that explores some of the origins and aftermath of the opioid crisis in America, highlighting the stories of the perpetrators, victims, and truth-seekers whose lives are forever altered by the invention of OxyContin,” says the synopsis.

Painkiller is based on Barry Meier’s book Pain Killer and the New Yorker Magazine article “The Family That Built the Empire of Pain” by Patrick Radden Keefe. It is directed by Peter Berg and executive produced by Eric Newman, Peter Berg, Alex Gibney, and the Painkiller creators/showrunners/writers Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster.

The Painkiller release date is set for August 10.
