Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 is no longer going to be released in theaters on August 16, and it’s a bummer to report this news.

This news comes after the first film in the saga bombed at the box office. It’s explained that the filmmakers wanted to give the audience time to find the first movie whether that be at home or in theaters.

The first chapter of the saga will hit digital on July 16, but it will also continue to run in theaters. If you haven’t gone out to watch this film yet, you should, it’s a great Western!

A New Line rep in a statement: “Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release Horizon: Chapter 2” on August 16 in order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and MAX.

“We thank our exhibition partners for their continued support as moviegoers across the US discover the film in its theatrical run.”

Territory Pictures added: “The audience response to Horizon, and enthusiasm for seeing our story continue in Horizon 2, has been incredibly gratifying.  Kevin made this film for people who love movies and who wanted to go on a journey.

“The support that we have received from film fans, and the theater owners, as they experience the first chapter of this saga only serves to reinforce our belief in them and the films that we have made, and we thank them for coming on board for the ride.”

As for what is being planned for Chapter 2, as of right now, there could be a theatrical day-and-date plan for Chapter 2, but that’s still being assessed. There are no plans to send it directly to Max.

According to Deadline, there’s “strong word which indicates Chapter 2 has no theatrical prospects. Again, no decision has been made.”

I hate that his movie is struggling at the box office, but I wonder if it would’ve been more successful had Costner released the entire Horizon saga as a limited series.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the theatrical experience! But his Yellowstone fans aren’t flocking to theaters to watch the film.

Horizon: An American Saga chronicles “a multi-faceted, 15-year span of pre-and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. Experienced through the eyes of many, the epic journey is fraught with peril and intrigue from the constant onslaught of natural elements to the interactions with the Indigenous peoples who lived on the land and the determination and at many times ruthlessness of those who sought to settle it.”

Costner went on to talk about the audience’s experience from this movie, saying: “Can they, in a sense, feel themselves in this movie? Because that’s what I want people to feel in the dark, that [it] suddenly just absorbs them. We all know what happens when the lights go out — either something good, something average or something great. What I hope is that this is something that stays with them forever.”

Costner previously talked about the story, saying: “It’s a really beautiful story; it’s a hard story. It really involves a lot of women, to be honest. There are a lot of men in it, too, but the women are really strong in Horizon. It’s just them trying to get by every day in a world that was impossibly tough.

“They were often [dragged] out to these places because that’s where the men wanted to go; women were following their men. They didn’t ask to be in these territories that were unsettled and dangerous, and life wasn’t easy. I’ve chosen to make sure that was really obvious, that that wasn’t easy, and how vulnerable people were.”

The movie also has a great cast that includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jamie Campbell Bower, Luke Wilson, Thomas Haden Church, Jena Malone, Michael Rooker, Alejandro Edda, Will Patton,, and Tatanka Means.
