Despicable Me 4 has performed beyond expectations with its strong start at the domestic and worldwide box office. The film continues the franchise’s overall success with a stellar performance across the 4th of July weekend in the US. It is also expected to be among the highest-grossing movies of 2024.

Despicable Me 4 soars past $120 million at domestic box office

Despicable Me 4 has gone a touch beyond its initial predictions for the opening 5-day weekend in North America as it has brought in $122.6 million. While its actual 3-day weekend numbers from Friday to Sunday went as high as $75 million, it started with $27 million on Wednesday and added $20 million on Independence Day, as per Deadline.

Here’s how its performance stands against the domestic openings of the rest of the franchise:

  • Minions – $115 million
  • Minions: Rise of Gru – $107 million (4-day Independence Day weekend: $123 million)
  • Despicable Me 2 – $83 million (5-day Independence Day weekend: $143 million)
  • Despicable Me 3 – $72 million (5-day Independence Day weekend: $99 million)
  • Despicable Me – $56 million

Counting just 3-day weekends, Despicable Me 4 stands at #4 behind the two Minions movies and Despicable Me 2. But it moves up a rank by counting the overall opening numbers including the longer 4th of July weekends.

Despicable Me 4 rules at the global box office

As far as the worldwide numbers are concerned, Despicable Me 4 currently stands at $229.5 million, having made $107 million from the international markets on its opening weekend. It has currently opened in 52 overseas markets, with Mexico and Brazil providing huge intakes of $12.6 million and $6 million.

But Illumination/Universal’s latest entry is yet to open in key markets including China, Germany, the UK, Japan, France, Korea, and Italy. All Despicable Me and Minions movies have proven to be global box office juggernauts. Now, a similar performance is expected out of the sixth installment in the franchise as well.
