I was really hoping to see Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 do well at the box office this weekend. I was previously reported that the movie was eyeing an opening weekend of between $11 and $18 million. In the end, it brought in $11 million domestically.

This makes me sad because this is a great Western, and I’m excited about watching the next chapter of the story. The movie is being distributed by Warner Bros., but Costner financed the film himself and to help out, he also brought in private outside investors.

Costner also financed the marketing of the film, so WB isn’t really out any money by distributing it. Costner is the one that will be hit hardest. While the film will be in theaters a little longer, I doubt it will make back its $100 million budget.

Horizon opened up alongside A Quiet Place: Day One which earned the franchise’s biggest opening with $53 million, and that prequel horror film came in third at the box office.

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 continues to hold the number one spot as it made another $57.4 million over the weekend and it has crossed the $1 billion mark globally at the box office. Audiences are definitely showing the Pixar love!

All three of these movies are great movies worth watching in theaters. But, as a fan of Western films, I was hoping Horizon would do a lot better than it did.

Meanwhile, Bad Boys: Ride or Die came in fourth place during its fourth weekend in theaters, earning an additional $10.3 million to bring its domestic total to $165.3 million. Rounding out the weekend in fifth place was the Hindi movie Kalki, which reportedly earned between $5 million and $6 million.
