Perfume [From Left to Right: Nocchi, Kashiyuka, a-chan] all wearing athleisure; standing in the ending pose for their song “Moon”.

When Perfume started posting the TikTokToes of them dancing to “Moon” in their lil’ athleisure get-ups, I just knew we were gonna get a ‘dance practice’ video for the song. And that’s exactly what we got.

We had already seen most of the routine to “Moon” when Perfume debuted a live performance of the song on Fuji TV’s FNS Kayousai Natsu, but it was still good to see it in different outfits. The “Moon” dresses worked really well with this routine, but they also distracted just a tad because you wasn’t able to see the full detail in some of the movements. So it was nice to see all of that in this video. Although I was once again distracted, this time by Nocchi’s outfit. They really shoulda had her wear that Adidas bodysuit as a bodysuit instead of having the front and back flaps out.

As with “Polygon Wave”, this is another really cool and kinda different routine for Perfume, in that it has more body movements and sass to it than we usually get, and the sound of the song is probably a big part of why. Something about this funky, 80s, bouncy sound seems to have Perfume’s choreographer Mikiko tap into a particular vibe, and I like it. It’s cool seeing Perfume move in different ways than we’re used to seeing, whilst still retaining the Perfume-ness.

I also really like this new thing of Perfume’s singles having phased releases. We got the digital single on August 17th which just featured “Moon”, to align somewhat with the J-drama Barakamon which features the song. And then we get a dance video for “Moon” 3 days later to tide everybody over until September 6th, when the physical single and music video drops. And then we’ll also get an update to the digital release of “Moon”, which will feature “Love Cloud” and the instrumental versions of both.

C’mon strategy. I wish “Love Cloud” wasn’t a B-side, but that’s a whole other conversation.

I have low expectations for the music video for “Moon”, because the quality of Perfume’s music videos has really dropped as of late. They don’t have the rewatch value of some of their earlier videos and they are very one note and predictable. The music video is just going to be Perfume dancing the routine in the dresses on the single cover art, on that same set the cover art was shot on, but with circles and cubes flashing on the screen. I hope I am surprised and we get something great and exciting, but I’m not setting myself up like that.
