Samuel L. Jackson’s Marvel character Nick Fury is in the spotlight right now, as his series, Secret Invasion, is hitting hard on Disney+. As he makes his rounds doing interviews discussing the character and the show, Jackson was asked by THR if he ever thought Marvel would ever give him a chance to explore a more vulnerable side to the Fury, in the way he has been able to with this series. Jackson responded:
“I didn’t think it was a never. I just didn’t know where that would be or why that would be. When Natasha [Romanoff / Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson)] died, there was a place for it there, because she was the person who was closest to him. For Fury, the most precious person among all the Avengers was her. They had the best relationship. And when that [opportunity to show vulnerability] wasn’t a part of it, now we move into how he feels about Carol Danvers [Brie Larson]. There’s something interesting about Nick Fury and the relationships he has with women in the MCU, as opposed to the guys. Even his relationship with Sonya is very different.”
The Sonya he is referring to is Sonya Falsworth, played by Academy Award-winning actress, Olivia Colman. It’s very cool to see Nick Fury’s story get told. He’s been in the shadows for the last 15 years, and it’s awesome to see him step into the spotlight. Secret Invasion is available to watch on Disney+.
