James Gunn is deep in the casting process for Superman: Legacy right now and he’s close to narrowing it down. He was shooting screen tests with several actors over the weekend and doing chemistry shoots with actors up for Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane.

THR reports that on Saturday “the actors were seen in predetermined pairs: Nicholas Hoult and Rachel Brosnahan; Tom Brittney and Phoebe Dynevor; and David Corenswet and Emma Mackey. They were given several scenes to film.” The actors were all decked out in costume to shoot these scenes.

On Sunday, Gunn brought in Hoult, Brittney, and Corenswet to do another series of screen tests, in costume as Superman. Mackey was brought in that day to portray Lane opposite the actors, but the report points out that does not mean Mackey is the front-runner for Lane.

Gunn is said to be editing together a cut of the screen tests show Warner Bros. on Wednesday, and a decision could be made by the end of the week.

Once Gunn has Superman and Lois cast he will focus his attention on the other characters. The report says that actors up for the role of Lex Luthor include Alexander and Bill Skarsgard. Hoult was initially on that list but is now trying to land the Superman role. Gunn is also looking to cast Jimmy Olsen, and members of a superhero team named The Authority.

The movie will introduce a new version of Superman, and it will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy will launch the movie part of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1, and that will be followed by The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl, Swamp Thing, and more.

Production on Superman: Legacy is expected to begin in early 2024, just on track for its currently scheduled theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
